Getting started
Intellectual property help in Sweden, without the guesswork
If your trade mark, patent, design or copyright is being copied, or if you need contracts that keep your creations safe, an intellectual property lawyer in Sweden can help you act before the problem grows. Swedish practice is compact: only members of the Swedish Bar Association may call themselves advokat, and state legal aid is available to individuals whose income and assets stay below a set threshold. We are a free matching service, not a law firm. Tell us what you are facing — a copycat product, a licence dispute, a brand that needs registering or a portfolio to protect across borders — and we introduce you to a Swedish lawyer whose day-to-day work covers that field. One short form, no cost, no obligation.
Sweden in practice
How legal work is organised in Sweden
Sweden has a small, tightly regulated legal profession and a reputation for very short procedural deadlines. These features shape how an intellectual property matter is run from the first letter to a settlement or a hearing.
Only an ‘advokat’ may use that title
Sweden protects the title ‘advokat’. Only a member of the Swedish Bar Association may use it, and presenting yourself as an advokat without membership is a criminal offence. Admission requires a law degree, at least three years of qualified legal practice and a passed bar examination, so the title signals a regulated practitioner rather than a marketing label.
State legal aid for individuals
Individual clients on lower incomes may qualify for state legal aid (rättshjälp). Eligibility is means-tested: as a rule your economic basis — income and assets together — must not exceed SEK 260,000 a year. Where aid is granted, advice under the Legal Aid Act is charged at a fixed subsidised rate of SEK 2,032.50 an hour in 2026, with a reduced fee for lower incomes.
Very short windows to challenge official decisions
Swedish procedure is known for tight time limits. An appeal against an administrative decision must generally be lodged within three weeks under the Administrative Procedure Act (2017:900), a considerably shorter period than in many other European systems. Where an authority decision affects your rights, you usually need advice before that window closes.
Limitation periods for money claims
Unpaid licence fees and damages claims are subject to limitation. Under Swedish prescription rules, a consumer claim is generally time-barred three years after it arose, while the general period for other claims is ten years. Because the starting point and any interruption depend on the facts, a Swedish lawyer will check the position on your actual file.
Deadlines that run in parallel
IP questions often arrive alongside other disputes, and those clocks run separately. A dismissal must normally be challenged within two weeks, or one month where no appeal instructions were given, and a damages claim under employment law must be brought within four months. Acting early keeps every route open.
Every figure and time limit on this page is taken from official Swedish sources — the Swedish Bar Association, Sveriges Domstolar, the Riksdag and the Government of Sweden — consulted in 2026.

When an IP problem lands on your desk
Most people come to us at one of three moments. Each one is easier to handle with a Swedish specialist on your side.
A copy of your work is on sale
You have found your design, text, image or product being sold by someone else, and you are unsure whether you have the right to stop it or how quickly you need to act.
Your brand is not protected yet
You are building a name in Sweden or across Europe and have not yet secured the trade mark or the contracts that would let you defend it if a competitor moves first.
A licence or collaboration has gone wrong
A partner, distributor or former collaborator is using your material in ways you never agreed to, and the agreement you signed is unclear about what should happen next.
Why clients use us
A calmer way to find the right Swedish lawyer
We do the first sorting so that you speak to someone whose practice already fits your problem.
Specialists, not generalists
We work with Swedish lawyers whose practice is focused on intellectual property — trade marks, patents, designs, copyright, licensing and infringement — rather than general litigation.
One form, matched by a person
You describe your matter once. We read it, compare it with the practice areas of Swedish firms and introduce you to the lawyer whose everyday work matches it.
No cost, no obligation
Matching costs you nothing and you are never obliged to instruct anyone. If you decide to go ahead, you agree the fee arrangement directly with the lawyer.
Cross-border when you need it
Many Swedish IP matters involve EU trade marks, foreign licensees or production abroad, so we look for lawyers who work comfortably in more than one jurisdiction.
Also covered
Matching across Europe
If your matter reaches beyond Sweden, we can look for counsel in the countries where your rights, your licensees or your competitors are based.
Questions
Intellectual property in Sweden: common questions
How do I find an intellectual property lawyer in Sweden?
Describe your matter in a short form: what you created, what has happened and what you want to achieve. We then match you with an intellectual property lawyer in Sweden whose practice covers that area, and you decide whether to go ahead. Matching is free and carries no obligation.
What kind of matters can a Swedish IP lawyer take on?
Typical instructions cover trade mark registration and opposition, patent and design questions, copyright and image rights, licensing and distribution contracts, trade secrets, and infringement or unfair competition disputes. If your matter touches more than one of these, say so and we will look for a lawyer with that breadth.
Must I use an ‘advokat’ in Sweden?
Sweden protects the title ‘advokat’. Only members of the Swedish Bar Association may use it, and pretending to be one without membership is a criminal offence. Admission requires a law degree, at least three years of qualified legal practice and a passed bar examination. Other advisers may assist you, but the title itself is reserved.
Can I get state legal aid for an IP dispute?
Legal aid in Sweden is aimed at individuals and is means-tested: as a rule your economic basis — income and assets combined — must not exceed SEK 260,000 a year. Where it applies, advice under the Legal Aid Act is charged at a fixed subsidised rate of SEK 2,032.50 an hour in 2026, reduced for lower incomes. A lawyer can confirm whether your matter qualifies.
Which deadlines should I watch in Sweden?
Swedish procedure is known for short windows. An appeal against an administrative decision must generally be lodged within three weeks, and limitation periods range from three years for consumer claims to ten years for general claims. Employment matters run on their own clocks, including two weeks to challenge a dismissal.
Does the service cost me anything?
No. Getting matched costs you nothing and you are not obliged to instruct anyone. You pay the lawyer directly if you decide to work together, and you agree that fee arrangement with them in advance.
