Consumer problems in Greece: getting to the right specialist quickly
Consumer problems in Greece rarely stay small: a faulty product, a service that was never delivered, a refund that is promised and then ignored. You should not have to work out alone which court is competent, which time limit is running or how the costs of a claim are calculated. This platform matches you with a consumer rights lawyer in Greece who handles the kind of dispute you are facing, in a language you work in, and at no cost for the matching itself. Tell us what happened, upload what you have, and we pass your file to practices whose work covers consumer claims before the Greek civil courts. The first response usually arrives within 24 to 48 hours, and you decide whether to instruct.

How consumer claims actually work in Greece
Greece follows the continental civil law model, so consumer disputes are resolved by applying codified statutes rather than binding judicial precedent. The blocks below explain how the courts are organised, who may represent you, what a claim costs and which time limits decide whether a case can still be brought.
Civil courts and codified law
Greece follows the continental civil law model. Consumer claims are governed by comprehensive codified statutes, principally the Civil Code (in force since 23 February 1946 and codified by Presidential Decree 456/1984) together with the Code of Civil Procedure. Cases begin before the Magistrates’ Courts (Eirinodikeía) or the Courts of First Instance (Protodikeía), appeals go to the Courts of Appeal (Efeteía), and the Supreme Court reviews only legal correctness, never the facts.
Who may represent you
Membership of a Bar Association is compulsory in order to practise law in Greece. Under Article 4 of Law 4194/2013, the Code of Lawyers, a person becomes a dikigóros by passing the nationwide bar examinations, obtaining an appointment decision of the Minister of Justice published in the Government Gazette, taking the statutory oath before a court and being entered in a Bar register. Legal representation is generally required for litigation.
The statutory role of your representative
Article 1 of the Code of Lawyers describes the practitioner as a public functionary whose office is a foundation of the rule of law, and states expressly that the practice of law is not a commercial activity. That characterisation carries legal professional secrecy, a duty to defend the Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights, and disciplinary control exercised by the Bar Associations through compulsory membership.
What a claim costs
Court fees are set by statute and vary with the court and the procedure. A proportional judicial stamp duty (dikastikó énsimo) is generally payable on the value of a civil claim, at 4 or 8 per mille depending on the type of claim under Law 2717/1999, Articles 274–277, as amended, plus a 30% surcharge allocated to the TAXDIK fund. Public entities and legal-aid recipients are exempt.
Fees, VAT and legal aid
A professional fee is freely determined by written agreement with the client and may cover the whole proceedings, part of them or specific acts, under Article 58 of the Code of Lawyers. Where no written agreement exists, the statutory scale based on the value of the matter applies under Article 63. Fees carry 24% VAT. Free legal aid is available under Law 3226/2004, as amended by Law 4274/2014.
Why timing decides consumer files
The general limitation period for civil claims is 20 years, while commercial, professional-fee and periodic claims, and tort claims, are time-barred after five years, with a 20-year absolute limit for tort. These periods run independently of any complaint you send to a trader, so the specialist reviewing your file will normally check them before anything else. The table below sets out the periods most often relevant.
The country information on this page is taken from official Greek bodies (Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Labour, AADE, the Bar Associations) and from the European e-Justice Portal, and was checked against those sources at the time of publication.

Common situations
Why consumer claims stall
Three patterns we see in files opened from Greece, and the reason they are worth a second look.
The amount feels too small to pursue
A faulty appliance, a cancelled booking, a refund that never arrives: the sum at stake is real, but the paperwork, the language and the distance from the trader make it feel easier to give up.
The trader answers with silence
You write, you call, you wait. The reply, when it comes, is a standard clause copied from the terms of sale. Every unanswered exchange makes the record you would need harder to rebuild.
You are unsure which period applies
Several different time limits can govern a consumer file, and the one that applies depends on how the case is framed. Delay makes an otherwise workable position more difficult to pursue.
How we help
What the free matching gives you
We are not a law firm. We identify the practice that fits your file, and you stay in control of every decision.
Subject-matter matching
We look at the nature of the dispute — faulty goods, undelivered services, unfair contract terms, refused refunds — and forward your file only to practices that work in that area.
Language and location
Where possible we introduce specialists who can advise you in English, while making clear that court proceedings in Greece are conducted in Greek. The location of the trader, the contract and the damage is taken into account.
Costs explained first
Before you instruct anyone you learn how the fee is structured: a written agreement under the Code of Lawyers, or the statutory scale based on the value of the matter where no written agreement is made.
Nothing to pay for matching
Using the platform costs you nothing and places you under no obligation. If your file belongs to another area of practice, we say so rather than send it to the wrong desk.
Cross-border files
Where else we can look for help
If the trader, the contract or the damage sits outside Greece, we can also search for a specialist in the following European jurisdictions.
Frequently asked
Consumer rights in Greece: your questions
What does a consumer rights lawyer in Greece do for me?
A consumer rights lawyer in Greece reviews the contract, the invoice, the correspondence and any evidence of the defect or loss, identifies the legal basis of your claim and the time limit that applies, drafts the demand, and if the trader does not settle, brings the matter before the competent civil court. We match you with a practice that handles that type of dispute.
Which court hears a consumer dispute in Greece?
Consumer claims go before the ordinary civil courts: the Magistrates’ Courts (Eirinodikeía) or the Courts of First Instance (Protodikeía), depending on the case. Appeals are heard by the Courts of Appeal (Efeteía). The Supreme Court, the Areios Pagos, does not re-examine the facts but reviews only the legal correctness of lower decisions, and proceedings are conducted in Greek.
How long do I have to bring a consumer claim in Greece?
It depends on the legal basis. The general limitation period for civil claims is 20 years, while commercial, professional-fee and periodic claims are time-barred after five years, and tort claims after five years subject to a 20-year absolute limit. Because each period is counted from a defined event, an early assessment of your file matters.
Can I obtain free legal aid in Greece?
Free legal aid in civil, criminal and commercial cases is provided by Law 3226/2004, as amended by Law 4274/2014. It is available to low-income claimants whose annual family income does not exceed two thirds of the minimum annual personal income under the National General Collective Labour Agreement. Persons with a disability of 67% or more qualify regardless of income, and EU citizens may also be eligible.
What will a consumer claim cost in Greece?
Court fees are set by statute. A proportional judicial stamp duty of 4 or 8 per mille of the value of the claim is generally payable, plus a 30% surcharge for the TAXDIK fund, and legal-aid recipients are exempt. Professional fees are agreed in writing with your representative; without a written agreement the statutory scale applies, and fees carry 24% VAT.
Do I need a Greek Bar member to act for me?
Yes. Membership of a Bar Association is compulsory in order to practise law in Greece. Article 4 of Law 4194/2013 requires the nationwide bar examinations, an appointment decision of the Minister of Justice published in the Government Gazette, the statutory oath and entry in a Bar register. Representation before courts, authorities and public services forms part of that mandate.
