How we help
Matching you with arbitration counsel in Hungary
Arbitration offers parties a route to resolve contractual and commercial disputes outside the state court hierarchy, on terms they agree in advance. Because everything turns on the arbitration agreement, the seat, the applicable rules and the enforceability of the award, the quality of your representation matters from the first clause to the final hearing. Hungary’s framework is codified, and practising law here is reserved to attorneys-at-law who belong to a regional bar association and to the Hungarian Bar Association. We are a free matching service: you describe the dispute once, we compare the specialists on our panel who handle arbitration work connected with Hungary, and we introduce you to the practitioner whose experience fits. We do not give legal advice and we never charge you for the introduction.
Hungary in practice
What shapes an arbitration-connected dispute in Hungary
Arbitration sits alongside, not inside, the Hungarian court system, but the surrounding rules still decide who may represent you, what a dispute costs and how long a related claim survives. These are the practical points worth knowing before you instruct anyone.
Representation is reserved to bar members
Only attorneys-at-law, law offices and registered in-house legal counsels may act as agents in an action. Membership of a regional bar association, which is itself a member of the Hungarian Bar Association seated in Budapest, is compulsory under Act LXXVIII of 2017; admission allows practice throughout the whole territory of Hungary.
A codified, civil-law framework
Hungarian private law is based on written codes rather than judicial precedent. The Civil Code (Act V of 2013) has applied since 15 March 2014 and covers persons, family law, property, obligations and succession. Curia uniformity decisions bind the lower courts, yet judges decide under the law and their own conviction.
What the court backdrop looks like
The judiciary comprises 158 courts in four tiers: district courts, administrative and labour courts, regional courts, regional courts of appeal, topped by the Curia in Budapest. Representation by an attorney-at-law is mandatory before the regional court and above, while parties may appear in person before a district court under Act CXXX of 2016, Section 72.
Fees and what they are based on
Legal fees are freely agreed between practitioner and client, as Hungarian law sets no binding statutory tariff for attorneys-at-law. Court fees in civil proceedings follow a tiered scale under Act XCIII of 1990, as reformed on 28 January 2025, and appeal and review proceedings attract separate fees. Legal aid may assist parties of limited means.
Deadlines shape the strategy
Whether a matter is heard by an arbitral tribunal or by a court, Hungarian limitation periods determine how much time remains. Debt recovery generally runs for five years, labour claims for three, while certain employment and personality-rights actions must be brought within 30 days. Delay can close a route permanently.
Related succession and family rules
Although arbitration is typically used for commercial matters, Hungarian substantive law also governs related claims. The compulsory share (kötelesrész) entitles certain heirs to one-third of their intestate entitlement and lapses after five years, and a matrimonial community of property applies unless the spouses agree otherwise.
Key time limits — Litigation & Dispute Resolution
| Matter | Time limit | Key limitation periods in Hungary |
|---|---|---|
| Debt recovery (general limitation period) | 5 years | The general limitation period for monetary claims under the Civil Code. |
| Community action on personality rights | 30 days | The deadline for a community action enforcing personality rights. |

Common problems
Why arbitration-connected disputes stall
Most delays and unexpected costs trace back to a handful of avoidable issues.
The clause decides the whole case
If the arbitration clause is unclear, silent on the seat or drafted inconsistently with earlier contracts, months can disappear into arguments about where the dispute belongs before anyone examines the merits.
Distance from local practice
Foreign parties often underestimate how much Hungarian procedural rules, language and limitation periods affect a dispute. A specialist who works inside that framework every week closes the gap quickly and early.
Cost uncertainty
Legal fees in Hungary are agreed freely, with no binding tariff for attorneys-at-law, so quotations vary widely. Without a specialist to assess the work involved, it is hard to judge whether an offer is realistic.

Questions
Arbitration in Hungary: your questions answered
Do I need an arbitration lawyer in Hungary, or can I handle the case myself?
Hungarian rules reserve agency in an action to attorneys-at-law, law offices and registered in-house legal counsels, and bar membership is compulsory. Arbitration clauses often add their own requirements on representation and seat. Because the wording of the agreement, the seat and the language all shape the case, instructing a specialist early is usually the safer course.
What does it cost to be matched with a specialist?
Nothing. Matching is free and carries no obligation, and the first response typically arrives within 24–48 hours. Once you decide to proceed, fees are agreed directly with the practitioner; Hungarian law sets no binding statutory tariff for attorneys-at-law, so the terms are a matter of the mandate between you and the practice.
Which Hungarian courts handle disputes if arbitration is not used?
Hungary has 158 courts in a four-tier hierarchy: district courts, administrative and labour courts, regional courts and regional courts of appeal, headed by the Curia in Budapest. There is no subordination between the levels, and the Curia issues decisions that bind all courts in order to keep the case law consistent.
Are there Hungarian time limits I should watch while a dispute is pending?
Yes. Debt recovery generally runs for five years, labour claims for three, an employment dismissal claim must be brought within 30 days, an administrative appeal within 15 days, and a claim to set aside a company resolution within 30 days subject to a one-year preclusion. A compulsory share claim lapses after five years.
Can an attorney admitted in Hungary represent me outside Budapest?
Yes. Under Act LXXVIII of 2017 a person entitled to practise may carry out the professional activities of an attorney-at-law throughout the whole territory of Hungary. Membership is held through one of the regional bar associations, which are themselves members of the Hungarian Bar Association seated in Budapest.
How does legal aid work in Hungary if I cannot afford representation?
Act LXXX of 2003 on Legal Aid provides support with advice, document drafting and representation in civil, labour and administrative matters, plus exemption from or deferral of procedural costs in certain cases. Eligibility is tied to the social reference base, whose value is set each year in the central budget act, so thresholds move annually.
