Why this page
Corporate tax work in Sweden, explained for clients
Tax questions in Sweden rarely stay inside a single legal discipline. A share transfer between family members, a disputed assessment, a group reorganisation or a cross-border contract can raise company law, succession and administrative procedure at the same time. That is why the profile of the adviser matters. On this page you can set out your situation in a few lines and we match you — free of charge — with a corporate tax lawyer in Sweden whose practice covers business taxation and the areas around it. You decide who to instruct. We simply shorten the search and help you understand Swedish procedure, protected professional titles and the deadline culture that shapes how quickly matters move.
Sweden in practice
How tax and legal matters work in Sweden
Swedish practice determines who may act for you, which deadlines apply and what state support exists. The verified basics below are worth knowing before you speak to a lawyer.
The protected title ‘advokat’ and why it matters
In Sweden, only a member of the Swedish Bar Association may use the title ‘advokat’, and presenting yourself as one without membership is a criminal offence. Admission requires a law degree, at least three years of qualified legal practice and a passed bar exam, which gives you a verifiable starting point when comparing advisers.
State legal aid and company tax work
Income-tested state legal aid (rättshjälp) is generally available to natural persons whose income and assets do not exceed SEK 260,000 a year. Advice under the Legal Aid Act is charged at a fixed state-subsidised rate of SEK 2,032.50 per hour in 2026, with a reduced fee for lower incomes. Companies normally fall outside the scheme.
Three weeks to appeal a Swedish administrative decision
Appeals against administrative decisions must generally be lodged within three weeks under the Administrative Procedure Act (2017:900). That is considerably shorter than the appeal periods in many other European systems, so correspondence from a Swedish authority should be dated and read as soon as it arrives.
No inheritance or gift tax since 2005
Sweden abolished its inheritance tax (arvsskatt) and gift tax (gåvoskatt) with effect from the end of 2004, so no tax is payable on an inheritance received in Sweden. The repealed act still applies only to tax liability that arose before 2005 — a point worth checking when tracing older arrangements or older advice.
The reserved portion (laglott) in owner-managed businesses
A direct heir — a child or grandchild — is always entitled to their reserved portion (laglott), equal to half of their statutory share of the estate. This portion cannot be taken away by will, and an heir must claim it within six months of being served with the will. It matters when a family business is passed on.
Marital property and shares in a Swedish company
The default marital property regime in Sweden is joint marital property (giftorättsgods), divided equally on divorce or death unless property is declared separate (enskild egendom) in writing. A surviving spouse also keeps at least four base amounts under the minimum base amount rule. Where shares are held by one spouse, this shapes planning.
The rules and figures above come from official sources — the Swedish Bar Association, Skatteverket, Sveriges Domstolar, the Riksdag and the CEPEJ country profile for Sweden — consulted in 2025.

Common problems
Why Swedish tax questions are rarely just about tax
Three situations crop up again and again when businesses look for Swedish tax counsel.
Short Swedish appeal windows
Appeals against administrative decisions in Sweden must generally be lodged within three weeks, a much tighter window than in many other European systems. A decision can become final while you are still gathering papers.
Tax, company law and succession overlap
Owner-managed companies, transfers of shares between family members and group reorganisations raise tax, corporate and inheritance questions together. They seldom fit neatly within one adviser’s desk.
Hard to judge advisers from outside
Only members of the Swedish Bar Association may call themselves ‘advokat’, and using that title without membership is a criminal offence. Knowing what the title does and does not tell you makes the first comparison easier.
How we help
What our free matching gives you
You keep control of the decision. We simply make the shortlist shorter.
Swedish corporate tax specialists
We match you with lawyers whose practice covers business taxation — company taxation, VAT questions, cross-border matters and disputes with Swedish authorities.
One request, several profiles
You describe your case once. We come back with Swedish lawyers suited to it, and you choose who to speak to and whether to instruct them.
Clear on procedure and fees
Swedish legal aid is income-tested and aimed at natural persons, so commercial fee arrangements usually apply for companies. Your lawyer explains the basis before starting work.
Confidential and non-binding
Your details are used only to identify a suitable lawyer. If nobody fits your matter, nothing is charged and you are under no obligation.

Looking beyond Sweden?
We also cover cross-border matters involving these European jurisdictions, which often appear alongside a Swedish tax question.
Questions and answers
Corporate tax and Swedish procedure — FAQ
What can a corporate tax lawyer in Sweden help me with?
Typically the tax side of running and restructuring a business: company taxation, VAT questions, cross-border arrangements and disputes with the Swedish tax authorities. Because these matters often overlap with company law and succession, your lawyer may also coordinate with colleagues in those areas. A first conversation usually focuses on facts and deadlines.
How quickly must I appeal a Swedish administrative tax decision?
Under the Administrative Procedure Act (2017:900), appeals against administrative decisions must generally be lodged within three weeks. This is far shorter than in many other European countries, so if you receive a decision, note the date immediately and take advice before the period runs out.
Can my company get state legal aid in Sweden?
Generally not. Income-tested state legal aid (rättshjälp) is aimed at natural persons whose income and assets do not exceed SEK 260,000 a year. Where it applies, advice under the Legal Aid Act is charged at a fixed state-subsidised rate of SEK 2,032.50 per hour in 2026, with a reduced fee for lower incomes.
Does Sweden still levy inheritance or gift tax?
No. Sweden abolished both inheritance tax (arvsskatt) and gift tax (gåvoskatt) with effect from the end of 2004, so no tax is payable on an inheritance received in Sweden. The repealed act still applies only to tax liability that arose before 2005. Succession planning can still raise other legal questions.
What is the reserved portion (laglott) and could it affect my business?
A direct heir is always entitled to a reserved portion (laglott), equal to half of their statutory share of the estate, and it cannot be taken away by will. An heir must claim it within six months of being served with the will. Where a family business is being passed on, this shapes what a will can achieve.
