How it works

Defence from the first police contact

If you are being questioned, arrested, or have received a notice of suspicion in Ukraine, the choices you make in the first hours can shape the entire case. A criminal lawyer in Ukraine can explain your rights, be present during investigative actions, and build a defence strategy. Ukraine’s criminal procedure is codified and formal; representation by an advocate is constitutionally guaranteed and mandatory in many situations, including cases before the Supreme Court. Our platform simplifies the search: you tell us about your situation, and we match you with a criminal lawyer in Ukraine who has experience in the relevant type of offence. There is no charge for matching and no obligation to instruct. You remain in control of how to proceed.

Ukraine specifics

How criminal defence works in Ukraine

Criminal proceedings in Ukraine follow the Criminal Procedure Code. The ordinary courts are organised in three tiers: local general courts, appellate courts, and the Supreme Court, which acts as the court of cassation. During martial law, justice continues through the same constitutional courts, although territorial jurisdiction can be transferred.

Court structure for criminal cases

Criminal cases start in local general courts. Appeals go to appellate courts, and cassation appeals are heard by the Supreme Court. The High Anti-Corruption Court has jurisdiction over high-level corruption offences. All courts apply the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code and operate in Ukrainian, with a civil-law approach to evidence and procedure.

Who can act as your criminal defence lawyer

In Ukraine, only advocates admitted to the Bar may provide defence in criminal proceedings. All criminal lawyers are listed in the Single Register of Advocates of Ukraine. Membership of the National Bar Association is mandatory, and a lawyer must complete a six-month traineeship. In many criminal matters, the participation of a defence counsel is legally required.

Deadlines that matter in criminal-related matters

While criminal procedure has its own time limits, related civil claims for damage often follow civil limitation rules. The general limitation period is three years; claims for penalties and refutation of defamatory information must be brought within one year. These deadlines are suspended during martial law and were restored from 4 September 2025.

Legal costs and free legal aid

Court fees are payable when filing claims, but criminal defence fees are freely agreed between you and the lawyer; there are no statutory tariffs. Ukraine also runs a nationwide free legal aid system. Primary legal aid is available to everyone, and secondary legal aid, including defence in court, is free for defined vulnerable categories of persons.

Martial law and digital court

Martial law has been in force since 24 February 2022. Courts continue to operate, but if a court cannot function, territorial jurisdiction may be transferred to a court in government-controlled territory. The Unified Judicial Information and Telecommunication System allows electronic filing and videoconference hearings, which can make participation easier for clients abroad.

Key time limit — Criminal Law

Claims for penalties (fines) and refutation of defamatory information — 1 year. Shorter deadline for penalties and defamation claims.

Common worries

When criminal risk becomes real

Typical situations our clients face in Ukraine.

01

Police questioning or detention

You may be called for questioning or detained. Saying the wrong thing without legal advice can hurt your defence. We match you with a lawyer who can be present and protect your rights from the start.

02

Notice of suspicion or charges

Receiving a notice of suspicion is a formal step. You need a criminal lawyer in Ukraine to review the evidence, challenge procedural violations and prepare your defence before the case reaches court.

03

Cross-border or foreign client concerns

If you are not in Ukraine or you are a foreign national, criminal proceedings can be confusing. We match you with a lawyer who handles cases remotely, knows martial-law procedures, and communicates clearly.

Questions clients ask

Your questions answered

Do I need a criminal lawyer in Ukraine as soon as I am called for questioning?

Yes. In Ukrainian criminal proceedings, your defence rights are constitutionally guaranteed, and the presence of a defence counsel is mandatory in many situations set by the Criminal Procedure Code. A criminal lawyer in Ukraine can be present during questioning, advise you before you answer, and prevent procedural mistakes that could harm your defence.

Can a foreign national be represented by a Ukrainian criminal lawyer?

Yes. Foreign nationals facing criminal proceedings in Ukraine have the same rights to a defence lawyer. Your lawyer must be an advocate admitted to the Bar of Ukraine. They can communicate in English or another agreed language, attend hearings in person or by videoconference, and guide you through martial-law procedures.

How much does a criminal lawyer in Ukraine cost?

Lawyers’ fees are not set by the state. The remuneration is freely agreed between you and the lawyer in the legal services contract. There are no statutory minimum or maximum tariffs. You should ask the matched lawyer for a clear written fee estimate before instructing them.

What are the main court levels for a criminal case in Ukraine?

Criminal cases begin in local general courts. Appeals are heard by appellate courts, and cassation appeals by the Supreme Court. The High Anti-Corruption Court handles high-level corruption offences. During martial law, jurisdiction can be transferred to a court in government-controlled territory.

Is free legal aid available in criminal cases in Ukraine?

Ukraine operates a state-guaranteed free legal aid system. Primary legal aid is available to everyone. Secondary legal aid, including free defence in court, is provided to defined vulnerable categories, such as low-income persons, persons with disabilities, and children, through the Coordination Centre for Legal Aid Provision.

How quickly can I be matched with a criminal lawyer in Ukraine?

After you submit your request, we typically share a match within 24–48 hours. You then contact the lawyer directly, explain your situation in confidence, and decide whether to proceed. There is no charge from us and no obligation to instruct the lawyer.
