The situation
Product liability claims under Hungarian civil law
If a product has caused you loss, injury or damage to property, the question in Hungary is who is responsible and how a civil claim is brought. Hungarian private law is codified: the Civil Code (Act V of 2013), in force since 15 March 2014, contains the law of obligations under which such claims are assessed, and the courts apply the code rather than binding precedent. Proceedings are held in Hungarian before a four-tier court system headed by the Curia in Budapest. Because the facts, the parties and the limitation periods all shape the case, clients typically instruct a Hungarian attorney-at-law, and representation before the regional court and higher courts is compulsory. A product liability lawyer in Hungary can map the route from your documents to a filed claim.
Hungary in practice
How product liability claims work in Hungary
Product liability disputes sit inside Hungary’s ordinary civil-law system, so the practical questions are which court hears the claim, who may represent you and what it costs. The points below are drawn from official Hungarian sources.
A codified civil-law system, not a case-law one
Hungary follows the continental civil-law model, so product-related damage claims are decided under written codes rather than judicial precedent. The comprehensive Civil Code (Act V of 2013) entered into force on 15 March 2014, replacing the 1959 code, and covers persons, family law, property, the law of obligations and succession.
Which court hears a product-related claim
Such claims are civil disputes, so they follow the ordinary court hierarchy: 158 courts in four tiers, from the district courts (járásbíróság) and the administrative and labour courts up to the regional courts (törvényszék), the regional courts of appeal (ítélőtábla) and the Curia (Kúria) in Budapest. Judges are independent and higher courts cannot instruct lower ones.
Who may represent you
Practising as an attorney-at-law in Hungary requires membership of a regional bar association, and those regional chambers form the Hungarian Bar Association (MÜK). Around 15,000 attorneys-at-law practise in the country, roughly 88 per 100,000 inhabitants, and an admitted attorney may act throughout the whole territory of Hungary. Only attorneys-at-law, law offices and registered in-house legal counsels may act as agents in an action.
Court fees and lawyers’ fees
Court fees in civil proceedings are governed by Act XCIII of 1990 and were reformed on 28 January 2025, when the former flat rate was replaced by a tiered scale for first-instance contentious claims. Lawyers’ fees are not fixed by any statutory tariff: they are freely agreed between you and your representative by mandate under Act LXXVIII of 2017.
Legal aid if your means are limited
Where income and assets are limited, Act LXXX of 2003 on legal aid can cover legal advice, the drafting of documents and representation in civil matters, and may exempt you from or defer procedural costs. Eligibility is measured against the social reference base, whose forint value is set each year in the central budget act.
Limitation periods deserve early attention
Civil claims are subject to limitation periods, and the general period for debt recovery in Hungary is five years. Some claims carry far shorter windows, such as thirty days in certain employment and personality-rights matters. Because classification of the claim drives the deadline, the timing of a product-related case is worth reviewing at the outset.

Common difficulties
Why product claims in Hungary can feel difficult
Three practical obstacles clients describe before they instruct a Hungarian attorney-at-law.
Working out which rule applies
Hungarian private law is codified in Act V of 2013, and claims are assessed under the law of obligations rather than binding precedent. Deciding which provisions fit your facts is a task for a specialist, not a search engine.
Deadlines that shorten quickly
The general limitation period for civil debt claims in Hungary is five years, yet some claims must be brought within thirty days. The timeline is worth assessing at the outset so that no route is lost through delay.
Language, courts and costs
Hearings are conducted in Hungarian, and the court fee depends on the value of the claim under the tiered scale applied since 28 January 2025. A Hungarian attorney-at-law can explain both in terms you can act on.

Questions and answers
Product liability in Hungary: what clients ask
How do I find a product liability lawyer in Hungary?
Describe the defective product and the damage it caused, and we match you free of charge with a Hungarian attorney-at-law whose practice covers product-related civil claims. Every lawyer we introduce is a member of a regional bar association and may act throughout the whole territory of Hungary.
Is legal representation compulsory in Hungary?
Legal representation is mandatory in litigation unless an Act provides otherwise, but it is not required in actions within the subject-matter jurisdiction of the district courts (járásbíróság), including appeals and retrial procedures. Before the regional court (törvényszék) and the higher courts, an attorney-at-law is required.
In what language are court proceedings held in Hungary?
Hungarian is the language of the courts, so proceedings before the Hungarian courts are conducted in Hungarian. This is one of the reasons clients with a product-related claim instruct an attorney-at-law admitted in Hungary rather than corresponding with the court themselves.
What does it cost to bring a civil claim in Hungary?
Court fees are governed by Act XCIII of 1990, and since 28 January 2025 a tiered scale applies to first-instance contentious proceedings instead of the former flat rate. Lawyers’ fees are freely agreed by mandate, with no statutory tariff. Where means are limited, legal aid under Act LXXX of 2003 may apply.
Is there a time limit for claiming compensation in Hungary?
Hungarian civil claims are subject to limitation periods. The general limitation period for debt recovery is five years, while certain claims must be brought within much shorter periods, such as thirty days. Because the classification of your claim drives the deadline, the timing should be checked early.
Who may act as an agent in a Hungarian action?
Only attorneys-at-law, law offices and registered in-house legal counsels may act as agents in an action in Hungary. Membership of a regional bar association is compulsory in order to practise, and a person admitted to the bar may carry out professional activities throughout the whole territory of Hungary.
