Why this page exists
A corporate tax lawyer in Latvia, chosen for your file and not for availability
Corporate taxation sits where company law, accounting and administrative procedure meet, and a question that begins as a calculation often ends as a disagreement with an authority. That is the moment when you want a corporate tax lawyer in Latvia reading your papers — someone admitted to the Latvian bar, working in Latvian before Latvian bodies, and able to explain the position to you in English. Our role is narrower than the advocate’s: we hear what has happened, identify the kind of corporate tax matter involved, and match you with a practice that handles it. The first conversation and the matching are free, and you decide afterwards whether to instruct. Nothing here is legal advice; the page simply explains how the Latvian system is organised so that you can choose with confidence.
Latvia in practice
How a corporate tax matter moves through the Latvian system
Latvia is a civil law jurisdiction, and questions about company taxation reach a courtroom through civil or administrative procedure rather than through a separate body of tax practice. The points below describe the structure you will actually meet: who may act for a company, which court hears the case, in which language, and at what cost.
Only a sworn advocate may act before the courts
Practice as a sworn advocate in Latvia requires admission to the Latvian Council of Sworn Advocates, a mandatory self-governing professional body. An advocate must meet the statutory qualification requirements, take the advocate’s oath and comply with the Code of Ethics of Latvian Sworn Advocates. When you instruct someone on a corporate tax file, confirming that admission is the first practical step.
Representation by an advocate is compulsory in defined civil cases
In civil procedure a natural person may conduct a case personally or through an authorised representative, but representation through an advocate is mandatory in cases falling within the jurisdiction of the Economic Court and in obligation-rights cases where the amount claimed exceeds EUR 150 000 (Civil Procedure Law, Section 82.1). For a company facing a high-value claim, that rule decides who can appear.
The Economic Court sits in Riga with nationwide jurisdiction
Alongside district and city courts, a specialised Economic Court seated in Riga hears at first instance the categories of cases assigned to it by the Civil Procedure Law and the Criminal Procedure Law, and its area of operation is the whole territory of Latvia (Law on Judicial Power, Section 29(1.1)). Appeals go to a regional court, and cassation to the Senate.
The case is conducted in Latvian
Court proceedings in Latvia take place in the official language, and documents drawn up in a foreign language must be filed together with a translation into Latvian (Civil Procedure Law, Section 13). The same principle runs across the court system. In practice your contracts, ledger extracts and correspondence need professional translation before they can carry weight in a Latvian file.
Fees are agreed, but recovery is capped
Latvia sets no State tariff for advocacy services: fees are agreed between advocate and client. If you win a civil case, the losing party reimburses your advocate’s assistance only within statutory ceilings — not more than 30 per cent of the satisfied part of a claim up to EUR 8 500, and not more than EUR 2 850 for claims of EUR 8 501 to 57 000 (Civil Procedure Law, Section 44).
Cassation at the Senate is a review of legality
The Senate of the Supreme Court is the cassation instance, sitting in the Department of Civil Cases, the Department of Criminal Cases and the Department of Administrative Cases and deciding collegially in a composition of three Senators (Law on Judicial Power, Sections 43–44). Cassation reviews legality rather than the facts, so the record built at earlier stages matters a great deal.
Every country-specific statement above is taken from the official Latvian legislation published with English translations at likumi.lv, consulted in 2025.
The problem you are holding
What usually brings a company to this page
Three situations account for most of the corporate tax enquiries we receive about Latvia. None of them is solved by waiting.
An official query you cannot read
A letter arrives about your company’s tax position and the wording does not make the real exposure clear. Without a local reading of the file, the commercial risk stays invisible while the clock keeps running.
Your group crosses borders
Invoices, intra-group arrangements and reporting lines span several countries, and each one applies its own rules. A position documented elsewhere may need to be explained in Latvian, before a Latvian body, with supporting documents translated.
The procedural clock is short
Latvian procedural windows are measured in days rather than months, and a missed step can close a route for good. Establishing which period applies to your situation is often more urgent than the substantive question itself.
How we help
Matching built around corporate tax, not around a directory
We do one thing: we connect your file to an advocate whose daily work covers it. Everything else stays between you and the advocate.
Admitted advocates only
We match you with sworn advocates admitted to the Latvian Council of Sworn Advocates, so the person handling your file is entitled to act before Latvian courts and other Latvian bodies.
Corporate tax as the filter
Matching follows the subject matter of your question. You are put in front of a practice that already works with company taxation, rather than whoever happens to be free that week.
You work in English
You can explain the file in English. Your advocate prepares the Latvian filings and arranges translations into the official language of the proceedings, as the Civil Procedure Law requires.
Free and without obligation
The first conversation and the matching cost nothing. You decide afterwards whether to instruct, and you agree the fee directly with the advocate, since Latvia sets no State tariff.
Cross-border context
Clients reach Latvian advocates from across Europe
Corporate tax questions rarely stop at a single border. These are the European jurisdictions from which clients most often ask us for a Latvian counterpart.
Questions we are asked
Before you instruct a corporate tax lawyer in Latvia
Do I need a corporate tax lawyer in Latvia, or can my accountant handle it?
An accountant can prepare and file, but once a question becomes a dispute about interpretation or a procedural step before a Latvian body, you need someone entitled to represent you. In cases within the Economic Court’s jurisdiction and in obligation-rights claims above EUR 150 000, representation through an advocate is mandatory (Civil Procedure Law, Section 82.1).
Must the advocate be Latvian-qualified?
For court work, yes. Practice as a sworn advocate requires admission to the Latvian Council of Sworn Advocates, the mandatory self-governing body, the advocate’s oath and compliance with the Code of Ethics. A foreign-qualified adviser can support your strategy, but cannot replace an admitted advocate where representation is required.
In which language will a Latvian case be run?
Proceedings are conducted in Latvian, the official language, and foreign-language documents must be filed together with a translation into Latvian (Civil Procedure Law, Section 13). You can discuss and instruct in English, but the documents that count before the court will be in Latvian.
Which court will hear a corporate tax dispute?
The ordinary system has three instances: district and city courts, together with the specialised Economic Court in Riga, at first instance; regional courts on appeal; and the Senate of the Supreme Court on cassation. Administrative courts form a separate branch with their own first-instance and appellate courts. Your advocate identifies the branch your matter belongs to.
How much will a corporate tax lawyer in Latvia cost?
There is no State tariff: fees are agreed between advocate and client. If you win a civil case, the losing side reimburses your advocate’s assistance only within statutory ceilings — for example a maximum of EUR 2 850 where the amount claimed is between EUR 8 501 and EUR 57 000 (Civil Procedure Law, Section 44).
Can State legal aid cover my company?
State ensured legal aid is available to natural persons only, under the State Ensured Legal Aid Law, and depends on status such as low-income or needy, or a sudden situation preventing a person from protecting their rights. It is administered by the Legal Aid Administration. A company should budget for its own representation.
