Why this page
Sanctions work in a small EEA state with three court instances
A sanctions matter rarely stays inside one country. If you are dealing with frozen assets, a compliance request from a bank in Vaduz, an export-control query or a listing that affects your business, you need advice that fits the Liechtenstein framework. Liechtenstein is an EEA member bound by EEA and EU internal-market law, and its ordinary courts sit in three instances — Fürstliches Landgericht, Obergericht and Oberster Gerichtshof. A sanctions lawyer in Liechtenstein works in German, in a jurisdiction whose civil law follows the Austrian ABGB and whose courts may seek an advisory opinion from the EFTA Court on EEA-law questions. Our free matching service introduces you to a Liechtenstein-qualified lawyer who handles sanctions and compliance work, so your first conversation is with the right specialist.
Liechtenstein in practice
How a sanctions matter actually runs in Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein is a civil-law jurisdiction of roughly eleven municipalities, from Vaduz and Schaan to Ruggell and Schellenberg, whose courts, language and fee rules shape every cross-border dispute. These are the structural points that matter before you instruct anyone.
Who may practise in Liechtenstein
Only persons entered in the Liechtenstein lawyers’ list (Rechtsanwaltsliste) kept by the Liechtensteinische Rechtsanwaltskammer may practise as Liechtenstein lawyers. The RAG requires, among other things, EEA or equivalent nationality, a bar or aptitude examination or three years of regular practice, a domestic office and professional indemnity insurance. Lawyers qualified in other EEA states may serve clients under the free movement of services (Art. 78 RAG).
Where a sanctions dispute is heard
Ordinary jurisdiction runs through three instances: the Fürstliches Landgericht in Vaduz as first instance, the Obergericht as second instance and the Oberster Gerichtshof as third instance. The Oberster Gerichtshof also sits as the Verwaltungsgerichtshof, the Administrative Court, deciding in senates of a presiding judge and two judges. The Staatsgerichtshof is separate and hears constitutional complaints.
EEA law and the EFTA Court route
Because Liechtenstein belongs to the EEA, EEA and EU internal-market law applies, and the EFTA Court in Luxembourg is the judicial body for EEA matters involving Liechtenstein. The Oberster Gerichtshof has confirmed that national rules binding courts to rulings of a higher instance cannot prevent a court from requesting an advisory opinion from the EFTA Court. That route can matter where a sanctions question turns on EEA law.
Language, free advice and legal aid
Proceedings and legal advice are conducted in German, and the courts work in German only. Under S 63 ZPO, Verfahrenshilfe is available to a party who cannot meet the costs without impairing their necessary livelihood; it may exempt you from fees and assign a Verfahrenshelfer. Parties granted Verfahrenshilfe are temporarily exempt from court fees under Art. 16 GGG. In simple cases court interns give free telephone advice in German.
What costs you should plan for
Court fees follow the Gerichtsgebührengesetz. The assessment base is normally the value in dispute, amounts are rounded up to the next franc, and foreign-currency sums are converted into Swiss francs at the SIX AG daily rate. If a fee is not paid on time, a Zahlungsauftrag issues demanding payment within two weeks plus a CHF 25 surcharge, and is then directly enforceable. Lawyers charge according to the statutory Rechtsanwaltstarif.
The 2026 limitation reform
Liechtenstein civil law is a reception of the Austrian Allgemeines Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch. The Government considered the old general 30-year limitation period no longer appropriate and reformed it; under the consolidated text (amendment LGBl. 2026 Nr. 23) the general period for civil claims is now ten years. Final judgments, enforceable settlements and enforceable instruments remain subject to 30 years, with a transitional rule for older claims.

Typical situations
What brings clients to us on sanctions matters
Most enquiries start with a letter, a bank request or a blocked payment rather than with a court claim.
A bank or fiduciary asks for documents
A Liechtenstein bank, fiduciary or fund administrator requests information about a counterparty, a payment or a beneficial owner. Deadlines and language make the reply urgent, and the wording of your answer can shape what follows.
Your counterparty is listed, your contract is not
Performance stalls because a business partner appears on a sanctions list, and questions of payment, termination and damages arise. Which rules apply, and where they can be argued, depends on the jurisdiction in which you are operating.
You cannot tell whether you are a subject or a witness
An authority, a court or a foreign regulator contacts you. Before answering, you want a Liechtenstein-qualified view on your position, on what you must disclose and on how to protect your own interests.
How we help
Free matching with the right Liechtenstein specialist
We are not a law firm. We introduce you to independent Liechtenstein lawyers who handle sanctions, compliance and cross-border enforcement work.
Verified professional standing
We connect you with lawyers entered in the Liechtenstein lawyers’ list (Rechtsanwaltsliste) kept by the Liechtensteinische Rechtsanwaltskammer, so your matter is handled by someone entitled to practise in the country.
Cross-border awareness
Liechtenstein sits inside the EEA and its courts may seek an advisory opinion from the EFTA Court. We look for advisers who understand how EEA-law arguments interact with Liechtenstein procedure.
Clear first conversation
Your enquiry is summarised before it reaches a lawyer, so the first call focuses on the substance — the request you received, the amounts involved and the realistic procedural options.
No cost, no obligation
Using the matching service is free. You decide whether to instruct the lawyer you are introduced to, and you keep control of the scope and the budget of the engagement.

Questions
Sanctions matters in Liechtenstein: frequently asked questions
Do I need a sanctions lawyer in Liechtenstein if my company is based abroad?
Not always, but it is worth checking. If a Liechtenstein bank, fiduciary, fund or counterparty is involved, or if assets or contractual performance sit in the Principality, local advice is often the fastest way to understand your position. We match you with a Liechtenstein-qualified lawyer who can tell you whether the matter needs action there.
Which Liechtenstein courts hear sanctions-related cases?
Ordinary jurisdiction runs through three instances: the Fürstliches Landgericht in Vaduz as first instance, the Obergericht as second instance and the Oberster Gerichtshof as third instance. The Oberster Gerichtshof also acts as the Verwaltungsgerichtshof, the Administrative Court, while the Staatsgerichtshof hears constitutional complaints separately.
Can a lawyer qualified in another EEA state represent me in Liechtenstein?
Lawyers qualified in other EEA states may provide services in Liechtenstein under the free movement of services (Art. 78 RAG). Anyone practising as a Liechtenstein lawyer, however, must be entered in the Rechtsanwaltsliste kept by the Liechtensteinische Rechtsanwaltskammer, which also requires a domestic office and professional indemnity insurance.
In which language will my Liechtenstein matter be handled?
Proceedings and legal advice in Liechtenstein are conducted in German, and the courts work in German only. Correspondence with authorities, submissions and hearings therefore take place in German. Where needed, your matched lawyer can explain the content and strategy to you in another language while the filings themselves remain in German.
What does it cost to bring a sanctions matter before a Liechtenstein court?
Court fees follow the Gerichtsgebührengesetz. The assessment base is normally the value in dispute, amounts are rounded up to the next franc and foreign-currency figures are converted into Swiss francs at the SIX AG daily rate. Lawyers charge under the statutory Rechtsanwaltstarif. Verfahrenshilfe under S 63 ZPO may be available if you cannot meet costs without impairing your livelihood.
Are there deadlines I should watch in a Liechtenstein sanctions dispute?
Yes, and they differ by type of claim. Following the 2026 reform the general limitation period for civil claims is ten years, while damages claims where the loss and the wrongdoer are known expire after three years from knowledge. Procedural steps are shorter still: an appeal on the merits must be filed within four weeks, and a recourse within fourteen days.
