How this works

Absence disputes handled by someone who knows Ukrainian procedure

If your employer refuses to accept a period of illness, disputes the document that supports it, or treats those days as unjustified absence, the paperwork quickly becomes the whole argument. A sick leave lawyer in Ukraine works with precisely this kind of file: the medical document, the employer’s internal decisions, and the employment record that follows you afterwards. Ukrainian employment disputes run through the ordinary courts under the Labour Code and the procedural codes, and several of the relevant time limits are measured in months or even weeks. Our platform helps you find a Ukrainian advocate who handles absence, pay and dismissal questions, explains which evidence actually matters, and sets out realistic options before you sign anything or let a date pass. You describe the problem; we match you with a practitioner for a first conversation at no cost.

Ukraine in practice

The Ukrainian framework around an illness-related dispute

Ukraine follows the continental civil law model, so courts apply the Constitution and the codes rather than judicial precedent, with the Supreme Court ensuring uniform practice. For a client whose absence has become a legal problem, that means the statute and the procedural deadlines are where the case is won or lost.

Who may act for you in court

The legal profession is regulated: every advocate is entered in the Single Register of Advocates, and only admitted advocates may provide defence and representation in court. A party may appear in person in civil, commercial and administrative cases at first instance and on appeal, but before the Supreme Court representation is reserved exclusively to advocates.

Time limits that decide absence disputes

Ukrainian labour disputes sit inside tight procedural windows. A challenge to an unlawful dismissal must be brought within one month, while a claim for unpaid wages and other sums due to an employee must be brought within three months. Where the argument concerns a decision of a public authority, the administrative claim window runs to six months.

What a court case actually costs

Filing a property claim before a general court costs 1% of the claim value for an individual, but not less than 0.4 and not more than 5 subsistence minimums; a non-property claim costs 0.4 of a subsistence minimum. Lawyers’ fees have no statutory tariff and are agreed freely in the services contract. A winning party may recover court fees and, within limits, legal costs.

Free legal aid if money is tight

Under the Law ‘On Free Legal Aid’, primary aid — legal information, advice and consultations, including by telephone and online — is available to everyone under Ukrainian jurisdiction. Secondary aid, which covers representation in court, is provided free to defined vulnerable groups such as low-income persons, people with disabilities and children, through the Coordination Centre for Legal Aid Provision.

Courts, martial law and electronic filing

Martial law has applied since 24 February 2022, yet justice continues through the courts established under the Constitution, and proceedings may not be shortened or accelerated. Territorial jurisdiction can be transferred to courts in government-controlled territory. Filings and hearings run through the UJITS system, with an electronic cabinet and videoconferencing.

Checking the practitioner in front of you

Admission to the Bar requires a complete higher legal education, command of the state language, two years of legal experience, a qualification exam, a six-month traineeship, the oath and a certificate. Disciplinary liability of an advocate is subject to a one-year period. You can verify anyone in the Single Register maintained by the Bar Council.

Key time limits — Employment Law

Matter Time limit and practical note Note
Challenge of unlawful dismissal 1 month One of the shortest windows in Ukrainian labour law, so a termination order needs urgent review.
Claim for unpaid wages and other payments due to the employee 3 months Covers pay and other sums owed to you as an employee, including amounts tied to a period of illness.

Typical situations

Where an illness becomes a legal problem

These are the files clients most often bring to us. Each one turns on documents and dates rather than on the illness itself.

01

The certificate is disputed

Your employer questions the medical document, the dates on it or the way it was issued, and pay is held back while the point is argued. A specialist reads the file before positions harden.

02

Illness leads to dismissal

A long absence becomes the stated reason for termination, and the reasoning in the order rarely matches the real record. Dismissal challenges in Ukraine carry a one-month window, so sequence matters immediately.

03

Pay or benefits are refused

Sums tied to a period of illness are reduced, refused or delayed without a clear explanation. Money due to an employee follows a three-month period, while a public authority’s decision is challenged on a separate track.

Why use the matching service

What you get from the first call

We do not advise you ourselves. We put you in front of a practitioner who does this work in Ukraine and let you decide the next step.

Advocates on the national register

Every practitioner we match you with is entered in the Single Register of Advocates, so representation before any Ukrainian court, including the Supreme Court, is properly covered.

Documents read together

Medical certificates, employer orders, internal rules and correspondence are reviewed as one file, so the weak point is identified while there is still time to answer it.

A clear view of cost

You learn how the court fee is calculated, how a fee agreement is structured and which costs may be recovered from the losing side, before you commit to anything.

State aid explained where it fits

If your circumstances match the state system, your advocate explains primary and secondary free legal aid and how the Coordination Centre for Legal Aid Provision handles applications.

Questions clients ask

Sick leave and representation in Ukraine

Can a sick leave lawyer in Ukraine help if my employer rejects the medical document?

Yes. The argument usually turns on how the document was issued, whether it reached the employer in time and what the internal rules say. An advocate reviews the certificate alongside the employer’s orders and correspondence, then explains whether the refusal has any basis and which procedural route and time limit apply.

How long do I have to act after a dismissal connected to illness?

A challenge to an unlawful dismissal must be brought within one month, which is among the shortest periods in Ukrainian labour law. A claim for unpaid wages and other payments due to an employee runs to three months. Because the two periods differ, the file should be reviewed as soon as the order is issued.

Must an advocate represent me in a Ukrainian court?

Not always. In civil, commercial and administrative proceedings a party may act in person or through a representative at first instance and on appeal. Representation by an advocate becomes exclusive before the Supreme Court in cassation, where the Constitution reserves that role to members of the Bar.

What does representation cost in Ukraine?

Lawyers’ fees have no statutory tariff and are agreed freely between advocate and client in the services contract. Court fees are set by law: 1% of the claim value for an individual’s property claim, within fixed minimum and maximum limits, and 0.4 of a subsistence minimum for a non-property claim. A winning party may recover court fees and, within limits, legal costs.

Does martial law affect an absence or pay dispute?

Martial law has applied since 24 February 2022, but justice continues through the constitutional courts and proceedings may not be shortened or accelerated. Jurisdiction may be transferred to courts in government-controlled territory. Limitation periods suspended under martial law were restored from 4 September 2025, so previously paused time is running again.

How can I check that a Ukrainian lawyer is properly admitted?

All advocates are entered in the Single Register of Advocates maintained by the Bar Council of Ukraine, and the National Bar Association represents the profession. Admission requires a complete legal education, command of the state language, two years of legal experience, a qualification exam, a six-month traineeship and the oath.
